Additional Notes

Letter-type label from the photograph
Letter-type label from the photograph. The handwritten
note: "WATERCOLOR SKETCH ON VERSO of MOUNT BOARD"

This photograph was found in an envelope provided by the framer who framed Roses For Mother in 2005. A handwritten note from the photograph notes, "WATERCOLOR SKETCH ON VERSO of MOUNT BOARD," and refers to this being the other side (verso) of another painting. Verso is a common 'art' term to mean, "the reverse of something such as a coin or painting."

The seemingly insignificant and unfinished work of art by a very young Woodward is not included as simply a matter of catalog purposes. In regard to Woodward's development as an artist, this work shows a special skill and talent for a young man under 18 years old. One can clearly see the formation of a grape bunch and vine leaf, as well as, more than one layer of detail added to the grapes. It could have simply been a matter of need that he never finished it and instead used the other side of the mount board to paint the beautiful Roses For Mother.
