The following slide show is of
a booklet, The Love Leaf, Woodward made for his friend Helen Ives Schermerhorn. It is his first known work
of art after his tragic accident in September of 1906. The booklet, along with other items and letters, was given to the Smithsonian Museum as part of the
Robert Strong Woodward Collection. There has been a lot of confusion as to its layout and dimensions over the years and we thought it best to present it
in a better and more understandable sequence. Below you will see that the
|
booklet and its bindings are a fixed portrait size. However, confusing
the matter is that the poem, (1) is wider than the binder that holds the booklet together, and (2) is folded over when the booklet is closed. [See below] More
than just offering you a better view of this work of art by the still young Woodward, we use each page of this slide show to offer our thoughts or the booklet and speculate on a
number of issues regarding what we perceive to be Woodward's mental and emotional state at the time. Every image in this slide show can be enlarged simply by clicking on
the image. Welcome, and enjoy.
