Woodward did not recall this painting when he began compiling his painting diary in the early 1940s. There are a number of paintings from this time
period that never made the diary. This is one of them.
This is pure speculation, but we wonder
if this painting could have been one of the 7 sent to Woodward's alma mater Bradley
Polytechnic Institute in Peoria, IL. The reason we consider this is for the following: (1) we do not know the names of all 7 paintings to exhibit and
Woodward excluded most of the paintings from his diary. A surprise considering how important this show was to him. (2) There is a painting exhibited named
"Along the Hill Road," and we can't help, knowing what we know about how Woodward named
his paintings and how often he painted similar scenes and giving them different names. This painting looks as if it could equally be titled, Along the Hill
Road. And finally, (3) the time period fits. While we claim this is pre-1921, it could easily be a painting from 1919 given its brush style and technique.
