RSW's Diary Comments

Dairy comments from Majestic Monadnock:

"Painted in summer of 1946. Painted, with Mark along, during three long strung out trips to East Jaffrey, N.H. from the door yard of the Old School House, summer home of Mr. and Mrs. Roger R. Smith of 75 Elm St., Gardner, and bought by her about Sept. first 1946."

This piece was recently (Oct. 2013) put to auction by Bonham's San Francisco Gallery, where they put an estimated value of $2,000 to $3,000. A number of the Frelinghuysen works of art were sold through Bonham's San Francisco Gallery.

RSW had previously made an oil painting of this nearly exact scene in Majestic Monadnock. In RSW's diary comments regarding Majestic Monadnock he states, "... Painted, with Mark along, during three long strung out trips to East Jaffrey, N.H. from the door yard of the Old School House, summer home of Mr. and Mrs. Roger R. Smith..." and we recently found in Woodward's personal photos a photograph (to the right) matching this painting.

Though from a famous family (the
Havemeyers) this is the only image we could find
of Adeline from her Bryn Mawr yearbook.

The Frelinghuysens had purchased as many as 17 works of art from Woodward making them his largest patrons. We do not have the titles of all of them but below is a list of the ones we do...
