Editor's Notes

Cachet: "a design or inscription on an envelope

to commemorate a postal or philatelic event."

-- Merriam-Webster Dictionary

We are certain the people organizing this honor of Mary Lyon did not have to twister Woodward's arm get him to provide the sketch work for the envelopes. The article below explains the symbolism of the use of the town's congregational church nicknamed, "The Mary Lyon Church," along with the local Grange's Meeting House.

"to symbolize the interest of the educator
in church and community."

Of the number of examples we have of Woodward painting the church, we feel, the crayon more closely resembles the sketch used for the envelope. For all we know, the artist did the crayon the same year or as a result of the sketch.
