• Woodward did not keep records of the pastels he called "chalk drawings."
It would be hard to exactly pinpoint the location and direction of this painting if it not for a letter Woodward once wrote to a customer pointing out the mountain peaks he can see from his beloved getaway in Heath. The mountain you see in the distance of this art work is Mt. Haystack in Wilmington, VT, looking just a bit southeast from the pasture. That would make this rock ledge part of the protruding ledge seen in the picture to the right but not visible in the image ⮞
⮜ It is hard to notice the livestock grazing in the distance so we offer you this closer look. It surprised us the first time we noticed it because we do not think Woodward ever owned cows. However, he would let neighbors bring their cows to the field behind his Southwick home and studio in Buckland so why not also be neighborly in Heath. We once received an email from a reader who said she didn't find any "people in our People & Livestock gallery. We had to explain to her that she would need to look closer to see them. Such is the case with these cows that blend in all too well.
