We are unable tolink this sketch with any known paintings, however, there is something about this sketch that feels very much like the same hills in Winter Song only farther back and more to the left. The stone wall and modest fence seems similar and the sketch would be from around the correct time period.


Woodward did toy with crayons. That is not really fair to say because there are beautiful crayon drawing in his catalogue (see: The Aste House and Mary Lyon Church, Crayon) but there never seemed to be the committment to the medium like the chalk drawings. Here he shaded the hills with blue crayon, perhaps to give an idea of distance. We do not know.
