It is a rare occurance when we have three versions of Woodward's process for a work of art. This plan is of the Congregational Church of
Plainfield (MA) Hill which was to be part of the Francis P. Garvan commission of historically significant churches and homes series.
We have this sketch, an unfinished chalk (seen to the left) and an oil painting (Unnamed: The Modest Church) which
currently hangs in the church in Plainfield.
We have no explanation for why the chalk was never finished, however, we can say that after Garvan's sudden death his widow
chose not to honor the contact and Woodward ceased his work on the project as a result.
