"Painted in 1947. Mary Griswold's gray barn facade and ell and slanting silo with band of trees in full autumnal color to the left. Vivid green mowing with suggestion of road as foreground, part of an apple tree, with yellow apples on it, stopping the picture to the right. Sold in December, 1949, to Mr. Elmer Hallett of Shelburne Falls, Mass.."
We need to clarify some things... this property is historic. It is from the fourth floor ballroom, from which famed educator, founder of Mount Holyoke College, housed her school, thus it is also known as "the Mary Lyon House." Her family even rented the house for a period of time. However, historically the house was built by the Griswold family and it stayed in the family for generations.
The image to the right was located in a group of color slides found in Woodward's personal items. The slides hold the ONLY color images we have from Woodward's time! The pictures were taken by close friend and amateur photographerF. Earl Williams on one of his visits in the early 1940s. Kodak ChromaColor was relatively new at the time. It was launched in 1935 and was the industry standard well into the 1980s.
