RSW's Diary Comments

• There is no entry for this painting in the painting diary.

Editor's Note:

Let's begin by saying that we have no idea what "spring scene" this painting might be, but when it come to spring, one of Woodward's favorite places seems to be North Hadley for whatever reason.

We know that spring was a difficult time of year for Woodward to paint en plain air because the winter thaw often washed out the less traveled roads. In the 1930s, Woodward painted as many as 10 or more paintings of two scenes both in North Hadley. There is the scene to the right, and an old farm we have no name for. (See The Farmyard; North Hadley)

Additional Notes

A clipping of the Springfield Republican, Mar. 15, 1950
The Springfield Republican,

Name Confirmation:

Referred to only once in the newspaper article seen to the left regarding the upcoming, March 15th meeting, of the Woman's Club of Longmeadow (MA).

We are certain of the name because if you were to enlarge the clipping, you will see Woodward underlined this and another painting simply titled, "Autumn," in his own hand. For those of you who do not know... if the name was wrong, the artist usually corrected it on the page.
