...consider $750.00 it would mean a more fair compromise. Why, the last 20/30 of mine which I said in January, netted me $500.00 from Mr. Gardner's shop in Boston! That painting took about a week of my time; on the 40/50 in question, I worked just a month and a half, every day. Such results do not come easily. I think my offer is almost childishly low, and except for the fact that the painting may hang in such a worthy and honored place, I would regret it. You can bear him my gratitude for his continued interest. Greetings to you.

...At this period of time, we do not know what the offer by Smith was, however, we do know that THIS letter to Miller had a distinctly different tone than the one RSW sent to Smith himself. We do not believe RSW was aware that Miller forwarded his letter to Smith.
