"Painted summer 1941. An extensive view in full summer dress of the Beech Tree, pasture and hills, made from the front window of the Heath Pasture House. Sold from the studio December, 1943, to Mr. Lyndon Hawley of Montague, Mass. (druggist with store in Millers Falls.)"
Over the past couple of years we have been making and effort to provide examples of
what might be similar paintings for pages we do not have a picture of the artwork. It is not always easy to tell what may or may not appear
to be similar but we make our best guess.
There are actually not a lot of " full summer dress of the Beech Tree" paintings. We
can tell by the color and hues of the ground cover. Yellowish tone and a chartreuse-like hue is spring. Tawny yellows and rust-like reds are
the fall. The Winter paintings are unmistakable and so the Beech Tree paintings with the most green tone and hues are the summer ones.
Pasture Ferns (1941) is from the same time period. The only other image of a
summer painting of the Beech Tree, is the gift Woodward made for Dr. Mark's
Boston apartment when he began medical school in 1950.
