"Painted in late Aug. and Sept. of 1942 . A painting of a little white house with a pink lower story, at the foot of the hill from the large home of Mrs. William Washburn du Mont, 'Tobini Farms' in Gill. Mrs. du Mont commissioned me to make a painting of this house and bought and paid for it as soon as delivered to her in October, 1942"
We do not usually do this but we thought we would show you the aesthetic of this canvas using the golden
ratio. It starts with the center marked perfectly by the blue cross. Note how the shade of the chimney aligns
with it perfectly.
We insert the golden ratio spiral, find what it lines up with, which happens to be
the little window of the shed and watch all of the pieces fall into place... It weaves its way through the
spacing of the windows, to touch the edge of the shed door, to meeting the wash-line pole, and makes a path
that hints at its envelopment into its environment. The end aligns with the mound of earth meeting the
house's foundation.
Fortunately this is the biggest spiral we have and it fit perfectly, without
alteration.
