This is an unsigned and unnamed chalk drawing, probably made by RSW looking out of the windows of the living room of his home which was attached to the Southwick studio in Buckland, MA. The blossoming tree is an Early Transparent apple tree. The view looks across the valley showing Putts Hill just to the right of the blossoming tree, and East Mountain a little farther to the right. Visions, like this, bring back memories of my boyhood. I frequently climbed up this side of Putt's Hill, carrying a sandwich lunch, then down the other side, to the site of the cellar hole and foundation stones of the Mary Lyon birthplace. On the way down the mountain I would have my lunch alongside a small brooklet and drank the spring water rushing down it. These were the days before anyone knew about beaver contamination of stream water. Anyway, I never caught any disease.
