6. We believe he can become self-supporting, which is his deepest desire and belief, if his mind and heart can be free for an adequate time from the harassing worry of meeting and mediate living expenses. We want to give him the chance, which he is never yet had, of getting, "ahead of the game."

7. We have persuaded him to feel as we do, and as we hope you will, that this plan is an investment, not a charity. An investment in a man whom we believe should be enabled to put his genius before the world-- an investment in Art by lovers of the Painter's Art. And we believe so earnestly in his ability, self-confidence, and indomitable courage, and his unquestioned and determined goodwill, that we know this plan cannot fail.

His living expenses average about $350.00 a month [$4,884.46 today], due to the fact that he requires a nurse-housekeeper, a boy or man and a horse. The latter is essential for getting into the country to paint. The man lifts and carries, attends to the horse, vegetable garden, the heavy work about the house and studio.

Therefore we want to raise $8000.00 [$117,227.00/today] to enable him to live for two years without worry or care about the bare necessities. This amount must be raised and we hope that you will feel the need as we do and respond as generously as you are able. The money is to be deposited in the Housatonic National Bank of Stockbridge, which will send the monthly sum to Mr. Woodward. All checks are to be sent to the undersigned.

Should anyone prefer to buy one of his pictures, he has six large canvases (40 x 50) which have been exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York, the Carnegie International in Pittsburgh, the Pennsylvania Academy in Philadelphia and the Albright Gallery in Buffalo, which on account of their size, are not readily saleable at a dealers at present. And there are seven smaller pictures, three (36 x 42) and at present. Any or all of these he would be very glad to sell.

Because of the immediate necessity we would appreciate a reply at your earliest convenience.

Very sincerely yours,

[Lunt Signature]
