• Woodward did not keep records of the pastels he called "chalk drawings."

The name found in the lower left

Besides being an upright chalk drawing, this beech is drawn from a slightly different perspective than most of the others. Woodward appears to have positioned himself to the left (window side) of the studio rather than from the front. It is from this vantage point that we see more of those "sea of hills" that the pasture afforded him.

The picture above was sent to us by it's current owners and we could not be more grateful and appreciative.

It was somewhat rare for RSW to use an upright portrait perspective for his pastels.
To capture the drama of this dramatic sky, he made the exception.
