• Woodward did not keep records of the pastels he called "chalk drawings."
Besides being an upright chalk drawing, this beech is drawn from a
slightly different perspective than most of the others. Woodward appears to have positioned himself to the
left (window side) of the studio rather than from the front. It is from this vantage point that we see more of
those "sea of hills" that the pasture afforded him.
