Woodward did not keep records of his chalk drawings (pastels).
We suspect this chalk drawing may be a similar subject to Top of the Pasture (right). There is
another drawing named From the Pasture Top. Both first appearing
in 1929. This chalk drawing precedes them both appearing at the 37 piece, one-man show held at the 1928 J.H. Miller Galleries. It
is a reach to suggest this subject is the same, if not similar, to that of the 1929 paintings. We could be wrong. Yet still, it is not out
of the ordinary, especially at this time in his career, for Woodward to make multiple versions a a favorite subject and so we feel we
need to point out the likeliness of this possibility.
For an examples of this see the chalk drawing: December Farm, A Winter Sketch
(1929) and the oil painting December Farm (1929), or
Near the Sky (1929), Courage and Peace (1932), and
Peace and Courage (1934)
The article to the right has a full review of the J.H. Miller show written by the wonderful Jeanette Matthews,
however, she fails to comment on this particular chalk drawing the article is a must read.
