New England in November, Sepia
>New England in November, Sepia

Painted about 1933. Painting of the Harrison Keach farm buildings from the middle flat opposite his house. To me one of my most subtle paintings. Sold from the studio Dec. 11, 1946, (along with Down an August Road to Dr. Edward P. Bagg Jr., 207 Elm Street, Holyoke, Mass., to be given to one of his sons at Christmas whose address is ..."

Comments on the back of a sepia print:

"Pellucid color, the sky pale yellow and lavender gray"

Editor's Note:

This is such an interesting painting. We wish Woodward had explored the three middle Keach barns a bit more. Unfortunately, the is only one other painting of the barns but from a very interesting perspective.

Henry McBride review
New York Sun, Feb. 6, 1935, by Henry McBride

New York Sun, Feb. 6, 1935, by Henry McBride

"...for there is something more in this composition than the enticing facts-'New England in November,' I believe it is called. But, on the whole, there are so many 'enticing facts' in this artist's array of canvases that I am ashamed of plying the role of hyper critic and incline toward accepting them anyhow."

We find it very interesting that Woodward refers to this painting as his most "subtle" painting and renown art critic, Henry McBride, is struggling with all of the facts contained within it.
