An Excerpt from a letter written by Woodward (1921):

"The 3rd 40 x 50 you saw, hung at the last Winter Exhibition of the National Academy of Design in New York, was also given a very prominent hanging and also brought me much sincere praise, 'Out of the Forest' by name, it is perhaps more typically New England than some of the others— a large sunlit maple-bole plants out of the canvas to the left in rather daring composition, with a dark wood interior for background, a foaming rushing New England brook twists among huge boulders and pours out of the foreground at the foot of the tree..." If we interpret the context of the excerpt above, this painting hung somewhere other than the winter of 1920 National Academy of Design show but we do not where. Woodward does not say in the letter, probably because he is responding to the other party's original letter which we do not have because Woodward burned all of his correspondence routinely throughout his life.
