"Painted prior to 1934. Big old maple back of Mrs. Griswold's which I've painted many times. (At Peace, Winter Peace, October's Flame etc.) Bought by Miss Edith Storer of Waltham, now Mrs. Rhoades of 'Lane's End' Sudbury, Mass. (1942 Miss Storer, at same address is now Mrs. Winfred Rhoades.)"
This painting is related to two other canvases, October Flame, (27" x 30") to the right, and October's Flame (30" x 36"). both this painting and October's Flame have diary entries but no pictures and October Flame, has two pictures (one a sepia print) but no painting diary entry.
Mr. and Mrs. Rhoades are known to have owed 4 paintings including:
Woodland Mystery sold in 1951
All Eternity sold in 1945
Summer Peace sold in 1945
⮜ We believe Mrs. Rhoades mistakenly refers to a painting titled Fall Flame because the Rhoades actually had purchased Autumn Flame, not Fall Flame. Woodward's painting diary has many mistakes, mostly years and dates, but we do not know of a single error in who bought what painting. Still, the Rhoades did change the name of All Eternity after purchasing it. Perhaps this is a similar situation?
