Editor's Note:

We do have a brief description of this painting from the article below. The closest match we have is The River in May to the right or maybe even, Silent River. There are also the Charlmont bridge paintings to offer another perspective of the Deerfield River Woodward painted. See our Brooks, Ponds, & Rivers Gallery

"'Hills in April,' another view of the Deerfield Valley along the Mohawk Trail..."

Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, MA, had invited Woodward to put together an exhibition that would be featured during their commencement season (the first couple of weeks of June). It was so successful and admired. Twenty of the paintings hung in the lobby of the new dormitory. It was so popular, the school's headmaster, Frank Boyden, the school's library namesake, asked Woodward if he could extend the show through the reunion and recruitment seasons which immediately follow graduation weekend.
