A quote from a letter Woodward sent to the new owner of the painting, When Apples Are Ripe:

"Cezanne never painted better apples than are in that canvas of mine..."


A bold statement for Woodward to make. Cezanne is an all time great artist and was known for his extensive study of the apple in numerous still life paintings. His most famous apple canvas, "The Basket of Apples," being the artist's most well known paintings. Still, Woodward's confidence in his apples feels earnestly said.

It is embarrassing how overdue this gallery's creation has been. When you stack Apples up against RSW's most well known subjects, they rank higher (in no. of paintings) than trees, window picture paintings, and barns...
